The USGA should be exempting 3 women to play in the US Open!
The start of Masters Golf Tournament prompted me to again feel the urge to advocate for the USGA to exempt last year's USGA Women's Open Champion and the top two ranked LPGA tour leaders to play in the US Open. This would make the tournament infinitely more exciting for many viewers, especially some younger female golfers. Lists of players currently exempt from qualifying that have less of a chance of being competitive than the players I think should be in the tournament include:
Winner of the 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur- Winner of the 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur
- Winner and Runner-up of 2017 U.S. Amateur
- Winner of the 2017 Amateur Championship conducted by The R&A
- Winner of the 2017 McCormack Medal, given to the top player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking
- Winner of the USGA Senior Open
- The two players chosen for the Special Exemptions as selected by the USGA.
- The people in the 50 - 60th places of the OWGR
Additional thought: There are about 100 male golfers that get the opportunity to compete for the $2.2 million dollar prize in the US Open without having to take the chance of getting a bad bounce in the qualifying rounds. Why aren't the best female golfers given that opportunity?
